Sidewalk Catwalk

Tuesday, July 6, 2010

In an attempt to save the garment district a campaign spearheaded by Nanette Lepore and Anna Sui, 32 fashion designers have come together to create an exhibit turning the streets of New York into a runway.  The campaign kicked off a few years ago bringing awareness to the dwindling industry threatened by over-sea outsourcing and commercial real estate. An industry that once employed 300,000 New Yorkers now accounts for less than 5% of jobs in the city.

The mannequins lining the streets are dressed in garments made from local materials manufactured in New York City's Garment district also known as "made in midtown".

The custom designed mannequins are dressed by well known designers including Norma Kamali, Diane Von Furstenberg, Naeem Khan, Jason Wu and Prabal Gurung to name a few.

The mannequins will be on display from now until September 3rd along Broadway from 35th street to 41st street. for more information on the exhibit visit sidewalk-catwalk.
